Started out in Melbourne where he lived in Footscray and worked as a contractor building houses. In this time his wife Anica became pregnant. They then went to Queensland and worked on a farm doing hard labour cutting sugar cane. Then he worked on a tobacco farm in Mariba, Dimboola, where his first son, Nevel was born amonst the tall grass, mosquitoes and snakes.
